The Fellowship Open encourages youngsters to pursue and realize their dreams, and particularly to consider careers in business. One of the many ways in which the Open leads young men and ladies to their doors of opportunity is though a series of mentoring programs. For example, while many guests are enjoying a great round of golf and a wonderful auction at the Open, young people and business and civic leaders are meeting and discussing the possibilities for their bright and exciting futures, inspiring those youngsters with living examples and realistic hopes of what they can achieve.
In addition, each of the youngsters associated with the event is given a business periodical from a major Wisconsin company, to study and learn more about it, along with a subscription to Black Enterprise magazine. Then, one youngster is selected to attend the national Black Enterprise Entrepreneurial Conference in the upcoming year, after which time he or she will share that experience with other youngsters.
Thanks to our Title Sponsor, Wisconsin Energy Corporation, a young gentleman named James Kirk attended the 2010 Black Enterprise Entrepreneurial Conference in May — it was a transformative event for him, which he has since related in highly emotional and satisfying terms to numerous appreciative audiences.
The PGA supports the Fellowship Open’s mentoring efforts as well, in connection with its community affairs. This year, the PGA event at Whistling Straits runs concurrently with the Open, so a group of youngsters will be taken up to Kohler, where they will be free to walk the course during the practice round, meeting and mixing with world-class golf celebrities at a world-class event. This is an extremely rewarding day for our Fellowship Open youth.
Finally in the fall, diverse professionals from major Milwaukee companies hold a business seminar for youngsters, to inform kids about opportunities in the business world — and to encourage them that their dreams can be achieved. The exposure to both business leaders and young professionals provides a unique experience for the youngsters.
